Texel, a colourful island

Source of inspiration

21 May 2026

There are moments that stay etched in your memory. A lovely conversation at sunset, the scent of honeysuckle that unexpectedly sweeps you away during a walk through the dunes. Nature is bursting into life in this early summer season, with vibrant colours as its rich reward. This is where you want to be. No schedule, no rush.

"Sometimes you need the island to awaken your imagination"

For artists, spring on Texel serves as a personal muse. There is so much to discover: from delicate bell-shaped flowers to windswept marram grass and sunlight drawing silver streaks across the water. Curious to see how they translate these impressions into their creations? Set out and discover a refreshing new perspective on our island.

Wool Cathedral

In 2026, the former Reformed church in Oosterend provides the setting for a unique art project. Almost 200 volunteer spinners and knitters spent months working on a Cathedral of Wool. With it, artist Ericka Voortman pays tribute to Texel’s age-old natural product. And she has certainly succeeded, judging by the reactions on the island. The woollen panels, with light gently filtering through them, radiate calm and warmth. In the honest silence, you get to the heart of things. In this place, you can feel what your heart longs for, or which dreams are stirring beneath the surface. Perhaps a holiday on Texel will give you a way to make space for them.

Art trails

Cultural life on the island is a world of its own. Artists capture colours and light on canvas, or devote themselves to a craft. While an acclaimed artist such as Jan Wolkers worked alone in his studio in the Texel woodlands, many local creatives open their doors to you. Kunst Zomer Texel brings together cycling routes past galleries, exhibition spaces and home studios. There, you discover what drives an artist and which techniques are involved. Paintings, ceramics, wood and felt art, photography: every art form expresses a love of colour, stories and pure materials. After an hour of browsing and inspiring conversations, you get back on your bike. The sea breeze clears your head, brimming with impressions!

A little package of art

Can impressive works of art really measure just ten by five centimetres? The answer comes quickly. At care farm Novalishoeve, you will find true little gems. In the farm shop, there is an old cigarette vending machine where you can pull out a “Pakje Kunst”. This initiative by an artist from Tilburg has now made its way to Texel – and to more than 38 cities across the Netherlands. Through this playful presentation, you get a taste of the local art scene and its makers. From drawings to poems, it is always a surprise what unfolds before your eyes. Meanwhile, in the daytime café, you can taste the best of the land. Novalishoeve turns its ingredients into delicious cakes, fresh bread and ice cream.
