Summery Texel
Sun, sea and blissful tranquility

Summer on Texel is one with a golden edge. The promise of a beautiful day ahead instantly gives you that holiday feeling. Forget your calendar and embrace spontaneous moments that add sparkle to life. We're sharing a few of nature’s treasures you can discover this summer – unrushed and far from the crowds.
"'Wonderful, those endless summer days. Feet in the sand and the bliss of not having to do anything.'"
Time for yourself
On summer days, the warm sea breeze carries the island’s scents with it: the sweetness of honeysuckle from the dunes or the distinctive salty aroma of the Wadden Sea. As dusk sets in, the air fills with earthy notes from forest and meadow. The best part about summer? You’ve got all the time to find your own rhythm. Sleeping in? Perfect – then you’ll enjoy a sultry evening later. Or set an early alarm to catch the sunrise over the dike. Rippling waves, wading birds and blissful silence.
Nature is calling
Island bliss is within reach – you just have to look around. Even during this busy season, when the TESO ferry brings many guests to Texel, you can still find peace. Yes, there are plenty of activities – from summer markets to active outings. But nature is calling, and those who venture off the beaten path will discover the island’s true character: pure, wild, and untouched. Come on, we’ll take you on an adventure.
Beach love: from seashells to surfing
Say summer on Texel and you say beach. Dreaming away on a towel, between swaying dune grass and the waves of the North Sea. For a few sunny hours, those square meters of beach are your own slice of the island. What to do there? Collect shells along the tide line, read a book... the choice is yours. Almost any beach access, like Paal 9, Paal 17 or Paal 28, is perfect for enjoying. Want to feel alone in the world? Walk through De Slufter to the sea. Other quiet spots are beaches you wouldn’t expect – along the Wadden Sea! The charming Ceres or Wadden beach near Oudeschild are real gems.
The sea is a welcome friend when you want to cool off or play in the waves. Swimming, surfing, kayaking, canoeing – you’ll find perfect conditions for every water sport. And if it’s adventure you’re after, you should definitely try mudflat hiking. When the water recedes, an entirely new world opens up. Put on sturdy sneakers – so you don’t get stuck in the mud – and start exploring!
Nature excursions: discover the real Texel
The entire west coast of Texel is a national park – and rightly so. The area has unique flora and fauna and invites you to take long walks. The highlight is De Slufter, where the sea is free to flow in. In summer, the ground turns a stunning purple thanks to blooming sea lavender. A guide can tell you all the details. Book a nature excursion or set off on your own – you might spot spoonbills or the singing wheatear.
Texel’s flower-filled fields are also a magnet for photographers. Young farmer Vincent Lap takes a hands-on approach. He sows his pastures with native flowers – a welcome boost for Texel’s nature. Vincent wants to contribute to biodiversity. His flower field is like a ‘supermarket’ for butterflies and bees. The great part: you can support him. Adopt a square meter (or more) and make the pollinators happy. Bloemrijk Texel’s meadow is near Den Hoorn. Bring a sandwich and admire your blossoms.
Scenic island route – for bon vivants
When the sun is high in the sky, the forest offers a cool retreat. On soft forest paths you’re treated to shade, birdsong and rustling trees. You can follow marked trails or make your way criss-cross through De Dennen. The forest was planted in the early 1900s for timber, but has since become a natural woodland with space for recreation. Mountain biking, horseback riding, playgrounds – everything in perfect harmony. The rich vegetation, dune valleys and heathland make De Dennen truly special.
Another green gem is the Maze on the Hoge Berg. It’s not as large as De Dennen, but it’s a fun stop on your bike ride. A wooden gate leads you to this historic spot. It’s an oasis of calm, with a sliver of the Wadden Sea visible in the distance. That’s why Commissioner Roepel bought this land in 1764 – it offered a view of Texel’s Roads, where VOC ships would anchor. He turned it into a small estate – and his successor Kikkert created a little maze. The forest is also known as “Eikenbossie” or “Seven Pancakes”, referring to the seven steps leading up to the hilltop.
