Winter hiking on Texel

Check out the most beautiful hikes

20 January 2025

Forget sultry summer evenings or lazy beach days. In winter, Texel offers a completely different energy. This season is marked by tranquility on deserted beaches and wild dunes. And how you’ll love it.

"Winter is a time to pause and recharge. Naturally, you do that on Texel, walking along the tide line, through forests and dunes."

As you stroll through nature, free of noise and tourist crowds, you’ll spontaneously notice every little wonder. Dewdrops on a web, mystical light filtering through the trees. Where can you find Texel’s magical spots? We’re happy to share the best routes. Make a pit stop for hot chocolate, coffee, or lunch, and you’ll have the perfect day.

Beach Walk: Feel the North Sea Breeze

The western side of Texel is one long stretch of sandy beach. The fresh sea breeze and crashing waves awaken your adventurous spirit. Thoughts of work deadlines, packed lunches, or your aunt’s gift will disappear as you focus on the nature around you.
A funny little sandpiper runs as fast as it can on tiny legs ahead of you. Gulls wait patiently for their next snack as the sea reveals a rocky pier. Wind and tides carve patterns in the sand or take bites out of the dunes. Let it all sink in and enjoy. It doesn’t matter which beach you choose, but we love the island’s northern tip, where the North Sea and Wadden Sea embrace.

  • Route: Start at De Cocksdorp’s lighthouse and walk along the northern coastline. The beach here is wide and peaceful.
  • Highlight: Spot a seal resting on a sandbank at low tide.

Pit Stop

Warm up at Strandpaviljoen Kaap Noord with steaming soup or hot chocolate.

Nature Walk: The Slufter Tidal Area

The Slufter is the only area in the Netherlands where the sea is free to roam. In summer, sea lavender turns the area purple, but in winter, its raw beauty is truly breathtaking. Far from being a barren plain, life abounds even in winter. Songbirds like snow buntings and shore larks flock to the tidal flats, while hen harriers and rough-legged buzzards are often spotted overhead. Not into birdwatching? No problem! You can still enjoy the expansive views or try jumping across one of the salty creeks.

  • Route: Follow the marked trails through the dunes. In winter, you can also go off-road in The Slufter, but waterproof shoes are a must.
  • Highlight: Stunning light and diverse nature.

Pit Stop

After a refreshing walk (or before), visit the Sluftercafé. Cozy and hearty meals await you.

Forest Walk: De Dennen, Texel’s Green Heart

If the sea breeze feels too strong, opt for the sheltered pine forest. Once planted for timber production, it’s now a haven for nature restoration and recreation. Lucky for us, this means beautiful paths wind through this part of the Texel Dunes National Park.
Despite its name, the forest offers more than pines—you’ll find various tree species, dune valleys, and heathlands. Climb the Fonteinsnol lookout tower for panoramic views above the treetops. In winter, you might even spot a carpet of snowdrops or purple wood hyacinths.

  • Route: Many marked trails lead through De Dennen, such as the Jan Ayeslag. Follow the yellow, blue, or red posts for a guaranteed scenic walk—or blaze your own trail.
  • Highlight: Discover the Sommeltjespad, a family-friendly nature trail (1.5 km).

Pit Stop

Try homemade apple pie and coffee at De Worsteltent, or enjoy a delicious Italian-inspired lunch.

Cultural Walk: Around Hoge Berg

The Hoge Berg area is one of Texel’s oldest landscapes. Here, you’ll find traditional tuunwallen (earth walls), sheep barns, and in spring, lambs frolicking in the fields. A hidden gem is the “Eikenbossie” (Little Oak Forest), a serene spot at the island’s highest point. The Hoge Berg is also rich in cultural history. At the Wezenputten opposite Brakestein Estate, iron-rich water was collected for VOC voyages to the East. Nearby, Fort De Schans—built by William of Orange and later expanded by Napoleon—stands proudly. Dive deeper into the stories with a visit to Kaap Skil museum.

  • Route: Start in Oudeschild and walk toward the Hoge Berg. Follow the winding paths and enjoy Texel’s unique landscape.
  • Highlight: Lambs in spring and Fort De Schans.

Pit Stop

In Oudeschild’s harbor, enjoy fresh fish at Vispaleis van der Star or Texelse Visspecialist. Prefer something else? Plenty of restaurants serve non-seafood dishes.
